Spring

This was the first in a series of pieces I created when prompted to make a set of four pieces inspired by the seasons, meant to be a series, and thus needing to have some sort of tie in. I chose to make each one a character that was sort of a physical representation of the season and inspired by fantasy or mythology in some way. For spring, I chose a fairy, and also a somewhat mother nature inspired character. She has soft features, a contented expression, enjoying the warmth and color of spring. She’s crouched down, gardening, and wearing a pastel colored sundress to usher in the beginning of the warm season, though a jewel toned cardigan over top of it wards off the last chill of winter. Her wings are a monarch butterfly’s wings, as they’re a well known butterfly species, and they migrate with the warmer weather. She wears a necklace made of a shed feather, and she is pregnant, both of them serving as symbols of new life, the feather molted from a young bird as it grows, and her pregnant belly indicating the beginning of a new being. I used a variety of different brushes here, pushing myself to add more texture to this piece than I have in some older paintings.
