Summer
This is the second piece in my series based on the seasons where I interpreted each one as a character that acted almost as a personification of the season and was based on fantasy and mythology. Summer was designed to be a mermaid, sunbathing on the beach. I wanted her to look modern, current, to reflect that even as the years pass, the seasons remain up to date with them. She reclines on a towel, keeping the rough sand off her skin, and a cold, condensating drink sits half buried in the sand beside her, showing the heat. The sun is setting, and she watches it sink along the horizon, basking in the oranges and pinks of the clouds as the sunlight turns the water into a pale lavender shade. I wanted to emphasize the time of day and the heat of the summer with these colors, and I chose to keep her hair and the colors of her tale in this same warm range, contrary to the common blues and purples of other mermaid designs I gave her a woven sun-hat, a common sight on beaches, but added dangling seashells and pearls that decorate it, along with additional seashell jewelry, as collecting shells and making jewelry with them is another common summer activity, especially among women. Sunglasses adorn her face, which is dotted, like her shoulders and stomach, with freckles from her frequent sunbathing, and her cheekbones and shoulders are pink with a slight sunburn.
